NEBC Finds Success in the Kansas City Mud

Several NEBC Men and Women braved the epic, ever-changing conditions in Kansas City, KS to toe the line at the U.S. Cyclocross National Championships.

The first day of competition saw Teri Carilli and Julie Lockhart racing strong in the B Women’s field for 18th and 28th respectively. Libby White also started the first day but DNF’d, saving the legs for the important race! Dave Chiu and John Broussard raced in the U29 Cat 2/3 field, with Dave eventually rolling his rear tubular completely off the rim and John Broussard holding strong for 31st in his first season of Cyclocross. Scott Brooks and west coast guest rider Gary Douville rode hard in the 30-39 Cat 2/3 Race with Gary finishing 2nd! Later in the day Wayne Cunningham raced hard for 26th in the super competitive 40+ 2/3 Men’s race.

On the second day we were treated to Libby White crushing her competition in the Junior 13-14 category and took home a gold medal for the second year in a row. Not to be out done, Cris Rothfuss rode HARD in the Women’s Master’s 40-44 race, until a last lap bobble caused her to lose the wheel of the eventual winner and rolled in for the silver. Sally Annis continued a phenomenal first season of Cyclocross by leading for most of the Women’s Master’s 30-34 race, eventually finishing 3rd. Teri competed in the Women’s Master’s 45-49 race and pulled in a top 10 finish. And finally, in a bold move to book end the day (and age groups) Julie Lockhart sucessfully defended her Women’s Master’s 60+ National Championship by lapping her competition!

The third day brought the freezing temperatures and ground, Scott Brooks and Gary Douville stepped up for the Master’s 30+ National Championship event for 44th and 22nd respectively and Wayne Cunningham held strong for 57th in his second race of the series.

In the final day of racing, Cris Rothfuss and Sally Annis started the Elite Women’s race. Cris had a phenominal race finishing 24th, and Sally started strong and rode with cris for most of the race but was put off pace and eventually DNF’d due to an unfortunate flat tire in the middle of the race.

Congrats to all who raced!
